A tree ceremony led by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth took place in Eastney on Sunday 4th December.
Councillor David Fuller helped plant a tree in the memory of Alan Dart, a founding member of Eastney Area Community Association, in front of over a dozen spectators.
A second tree was planted in honour of all past and present volunteers of the community centre’s Tuesday Club.
Councillor Fuller said: “I was absolutely honoured to be here and to see what goes on in Eastney Community Centre, and to hear about these people who have devoted so much help to the centre.”
Elected in earlier this year in May having represented the Fratton Ward as a Liberal Democrat since 2008, the Mayor also highlighted the importance of community centres in Portsmouth.
“They’re a hub to get people together and share experiences. I know that budget restraints are with us at this moment in time, but it’s so important that they’re kept going as much as possible.”
The tree ceremony was followed by a Christmas fayre, which was well supported by Eastney residents and raised money to go towards the centre.
Support worker Ann Eves said: “The committee have been doing the Christmas fayre for over thirty years. The committee have developed it over the years.”
“Our grotto is the best in the city!” Eves added, “We transform our mirrored dance studio, which means the white snow is reflected back in the mirrors.”
